Does Your Business Exist?
I was listening to Issac Mizrahi on NPR’s On Point with Tom Ashbrook, when the effervescent fashion designer, said something really insightful about the Age we are living in.
If you are not on the Internet, he said, it’s as if you don’t exist.
Mizrahi, who has styled us as a TV presenter, and dressed us as the creative director of Xcel Brands, is brilliant and has been around long enough to observed the changes the Internet has fashioned. He is also the subject of a new exhibit at the Jewish Museum, “Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History.”
So what did Mizrahi mean when he said if you’re not on the Internet you might not exist?
How this translates, at least for me, is that the Internet has become so stitched into the fabric of our lives that it has come to define who we are, in many cases.
We “Google” almost everything. If we have a question, we “google” the answer. What’s the meaning of a certain word? Where did that phrase originate. Who designed Xcel Brands? Where is that store? Can I buy it online?
Google has become the fashion designer of what a successful business looks like in our Digital Age.
I was talking with a couple of friends recently about a potential business niche, and all we had to do was Google it to see the viability of the idea. While sitting on a boat on the Connecticut River, we got our answer.
So as a business owner, how do you take advantage of this important fact?

But just getting a website is not enough. If search engine users can’t find you on Page 1 of Google for your products and services, you don’t exist for them.
